Header pins, also known simply as headers or pin headers, are common electronic components used in various applications to create electrical connections between different components or devices. They consist of a row of metal pins encased in a plastic or insulating housing.

- Male Headers: Male headers have pins that protrude from the housing. They are designed to be inserted into female connectors or sockets, such as those on microcontrollers, development boards, or sensors.
- Female Headers: Female headers have receptacles or sockets that accept male pins. They are often used on PCBs (printed circuit boards) or as connectors for interfacing with other components.
- Right-Angle Headers: Right-angle headers have pins that are bent at a 90-degree angle. They are useful for creating connections on PCBs where space constraints or specific orientations are a concern.
- Surface-Mount Headers: Surface-mount headers are designed to be soldered directly onto the surface of a PCB, eliminating the need for holes. They are commonly used in SMD (surface-mount device) applications.
- Number of Pins: Header pins come in various configurations with different numbers of pins. Common configurations include single-row headers with 1×2, 1×4, 1×6 pins and double-row headers with 2×4, 2×6, or 2×10 pins, among others. The number of pins depends on the specific application and the components being connected.
- Spacing and Pitch: The spacing between adjacent pins is referred to as the “pitch.” Common pitch values for header pins include 0.1 inches (2.54 mm) and 0.05 inches (1.27 mm). The 0.1-inch pitch is the most common and is often used in breadboards and standard PCBs.
- Uses:
- Interfacing Components: Header pins are frequently used to connect microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi), sensors, displays, and other electronic components to PCBs or other devices.
- Programming and Debugging: They are used to create programming and debugging connections between microcontrollers and programming tools, such as JTAG or SWD interfaces.
- Prototyping: In prototyping, header pins are used on development boards, allowing users to connect jumper wires or other components to create and test circuits.
- Assembly: Header pins are typically soldered onto PCBs or components to establish secure and reliable electrical connections. They are often used with through-hole components but can also be surface-mounted in SMD applications.
